Strawberry-Sour Cream Ice Cream! 4th of July!

There is just something about homemade ice cream...it's the taste of the snow capped mountain on a sunny day or maybe it's that warm feeling of the sun shinning on your shoulders on a Summer day; an idealized memory of Summer in culinary form. Brilliant pink fresh strawberry ice cream is a classic flavor and, along with chocolate and vanilla is an American favorite.
I love berries and eat them every morning for breakfast, however, strawberries served with sour cream.........they are the most delicious! David Lobowitz combined these two ingredients to make this delicious ice cream. I had the privilege of taking two classes from David when he was in Seattle a couple years ago. His recipes are infallible.... when followed.  A couple of tips - macerating the berries before hand magically transforms even so so berries into fruits that are brilliantly red. Make sure you refrigerate the mixture for a full hour before churning and try to eat this soon after it is churned.

Strawberry-Sour Cream Ice Cream
From the book written by David Lebowitz- "Perfect Scoop"

1lb. fresh strawberries, rinsed and hulled
3/4 c. sugar
1 T. vodka or Kirsch
1 c. sour cream
1 c. heavy cream
1/2 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice

Slice the strawberries and toss them in a bowl with the sugar and vodka or kirsch, stirring until the sugar begins to dissolve. Cover annd let stand at room temperature for 1 hour, stirring every so often.

Pulse the strawberries and their liquid with the sour cream, heavy cream, and lemon juice in a blender or food processor until almost smooth but still slightly chunky.

Refrigerate for 1 hour, then freeze in your ice cream maker according to manufacturers instructions.

I am still away on our dream vacation to Dubai and Africa. I wrote this blog and scheduled it to be posted ahead. I will be home in time for the 4th of July festivities with our family. Thank you to my thoughtful daughter-in-law for writing two blogs for me to schedule, while Wee Bear and are off living our dream!

Enjoy your 4th!
